‘Ranbir's comic timing is brilliant’

Rankumar Santoshi, known for his dramas like Lajja, Khakee or for that matter action films like Ghatak or Ghayal, is making his comedy comeback after 14 years with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani that has Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the lead.

Santoshi’s 1994 comedy Andaz Apna Apna that had Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in the lead was a runaway success and the director is hoping Ranbir-Kat combo would also do wonders at the box office.

“I’m very hopeful about this film, it’s a romantic comedy which most people will be able to connect with,” he told After Hours, adding, “I love directing comedies. I hope this one will please the audiences too.”

But what made this devout Ajay Devgan fan cast Ranbir in the lead?

“Ranbir suited the role more I guess, we recently did a photo shoot with Ranbir and Katrina and found their chemistry to be engaging,” he said.

The director goes on about the actor’s comic timing which has left him quite impressed. “Ranbir’s comic timing is brilliant, his expressions are very good and he’s a lively character on the sets or off it. He’s boy to watch out for in the future,” Rajkumar said,
adding, “I saw Saawariya and I thought that he was really good. He lit up the screen. He’s a very talented actor and I’m very confident he’ll do a great job for my project too.”

But why is Ajay not in the lead? Is it because of his recent streak of landing flops?
“The film is a youthful romance, casting Ranbir in the lead is purely the script demand. There’s nothing to read in between the lines,” the director shot back.

Ok. We get the point. Now why don’t you tell us something about casting Katrina opposite Ranbir?

“She is a beautiful lady and she suits the character of my film,” he said, adding, “They looked lovely together during the photo-shoot. They are very compatible with each other.”

The title is kinda strange no?

“Oh it’s just a working title. It will change with time,” the veteran director said. Santoshi starts shooting on June 18 in Mumbai and then the team will head for some exotic international locations.” Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is expected to wrap up filming by November.
