Will Ranbir live up to the legacy of the Kapoors?

His debut is one of the most talked about in recent times. All eyes will be on Ranbir Kapoor – the son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor who will be seen on screen for the first time in the most eagerly anticipated film of this year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. Expectations are running high.

“I know he is very capable hands. But then you never know. I just pray to God that he can live up to the expectations. Fingers and everything crossed,” says Rishi Kapoor.

Ranbir has some big shoes to fill in, with the legacy of the Kapoors, which began with Prithviraj kapoor in the 1930′s. The next generation of the Kapoors, Raj, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor also established themselves as successful stars, with Raj Kapoor also making his mark as a filmmaker.

At the age of 24, Raj Kapoor launched the RK Films banner and then set up the RK Studios. Bollywood got its Showman. The Kapoor clan continued their starry journey in Bollywood, with Raj Kapoor’s sons Rishi, Randhir and Rajeev Kapoor. While Randhir and Rajeev Kapoor could not replicate the same success as heroes, Rishi Kapoor was one of the most popular romantic heroes of his generation.

From romantic stories to socially conscious themes, the Kapoors starred in all kinds of films and ruled the industry from the 50s to the 80s. The family played up to the Bollywood myth by coming together on screen for the first time in Randhir Kapoor’s film Kal, Aaj Aur Kal.

For long, the Kapoor women did not venture on screen, but Randhir’s daughters Karisma and Kareena broke the family tradition by becoming among the most sought after leading ladies in the film industry, and that too without any help from the home banner.

By the late 90′s, the RK films banner had stopped making films. Their last films Prem Granth and Aa Ab Laut Chalen didn’t work at the box office also. But now they are planning to revive the banner.

“I keep telling RK film fans that we will make films. I guess we will now probably design a film keeping Ranbir in mind now. So lets watch and wait,” says Rishi Kapoor.

It’s the 60th year of the RK banner and the timing could not have been better for Ranbir’s launch. Hopefully we will all get to see more of this promising young newcomer in the days to come.
